This paper examines the relationship between per capita income and a wide range of environmental indicators using cross-country panel sets. The manner in which this has been done overcomes several of the weaknesses asscociated with the estimation of environmental Kuznets curves (EKCs). outlined by Stern et al. (1996).

Despite this, the EKC was criticized almost from the start and decomposition approaches have been more popular in other disciplines working on global climate change. The Environmental Kuznets Curve James Van Alstine and Eric Neumayer Correspondence address: Department of Geography and Environment and Center for Environmental Policy and Don refines the environmental Kuznets Curve. Conventionally, as a society becomes wealthier through industrialization and better economic coordination, industrial pollution increases. Then, as it moves from subsistence to affluence, the society invests in an ever-cleaner environment. Formal statistical comparisons of the results overwhelmingly reject the parametric approach. environmental degradation is an inevitable consequence of economic growth.

1999-11-01 · Abstract. In the last few years, several studies have found an inverted-U relationship between per capita income and environmental degradation. This relationship, known as the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), suggests that environmental degradation increases in the early stages of growth, but it eventually decreases as income exceeds a threshold level. Environmental Kuznets curves have been estimated using a simple reduced-form model that gives no information on the mechanisms underlying the estimated inverted U-shaped relationship between some pollutants and income.

INTRODUCTION The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) is a hypothesized relationship between various indicators of environmental degradation and income per capita. In the early stages of eco-nomic growth degradation and pollution Using U.S. state-level panel data on nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide emissions, we estimate several environmental Kuznets curves using the standard parametric framework as well as a more flexible semiparametric alternative. Formal statistical comparisons of the results overwhelmingly reject the parametric approach. pattern of inequality and income described by Simon Kuznets (1955), this pattern of pollution and income has been labelled an ‘environmental Kuznets curve’ (EKC).

The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is a well-established hypothesis in the literature of energy and environmental economics. While assessing the relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation, Grossman and Krueger (1991) found its resemblance with the findings of Simon Kuznets (1955) , and they named this association as the EKC hypothesis.
